Musical Theatre at the Hub

Christmas is being stolen. Again!
As a way to kick off the fall/winter season, our 10-week musical theatre production program for school-aged children (6-13) will culminate in a presentation of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” on December 20th & 21st. Have your little ones join the experienced instructors at The Hub twice a week, as they learn the ins-and-outs of being part of a musical production. They will be encouraged to explore the realms of singing, dancing and acting in a rounded theatrical experience suited to their individual learning and comfort level, with the chance to perform a much-loved Christmas classic in front of a live audience. They will also be encouraged to engage in the technical aspects of musical theatre, in the form of costuming, props and set-design/decor. The Hub strives to offer children and youth an unconventional and engaging educational experience, and understands the uniqueness from which talent and individual styles of exploration arise. Tickets will be made available in November for showings on the 20th and 21st of December of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”

The Hub’s Musical Theatre Program has an early start program starting on October 23rd that has a bonus audition workshop or for the official start of camp, Oct. 30th for the SAME PRICE.  We’re offering a 10-week after-school program for children 6-13 years of age with an enthusiasm for performing and collaboration. The Musical Theatre Program will commence October 23rd, and will run for 10 weeks on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:30pm-5:00pm.

The Hub Arts Collective opened downtown in January of this year and acts as an “all ages” rehearsal studio, live venue and art exhibit centre. It is composed of professionals who have been intimately involved with the arts and entertainment industries collaborating with experienced local artists and educators to offer a diverse array of programs and shows. The Hub is located at 2906 30th Ave, next to the Vernon Towne Cinema.

Dance Classes at the Inner World School

I am not sure if anyone still checks this blog but in case they do, here is the information for upcoming dance classes at the Inner World School starting this week.  Of special interest in the Advanced Ballet which will be only for homeschoolers in the early afternoon on Thursdays.  Right now it is scheduled for 1pm but if the Creative Movement class doesn't go, then the Advanced Ballet class will be at 2pm instead.  I know... kind of confusing but there you have it.  Also, the age suggestion is only a suggestion.  We already have a very talented 7 year old signed up.  Students do need to have some ballet experience and to be able to keep up with the class.  They are welcome to just try it to see if it is good fit, too.

Creative Dance at the Inner World School

At the Inner World School our dance classes have been developed out of a love of dance and a belief in the innate ability of children.  We teach children to use the medium of dance to express their feelings, ideas and creativity.  Their ideas and creative direction become an integral part of the class.  Come and join the fun in our next classes.

Discounts!  I am sure you have noticed that our prices have gone up slightly ($2 a class). This is because the CWI had to raise their costs due to increased utility costs. However, we are introducing a discount. If you take more than one class or have more than one dance student in your family, we are offering you a discount - just pay last year's prices ($120 a semester - or $110 for the Monday Tap and Jazz) for each student.

All Dance classes are held at the Coldstream Women’s Institute across from Coldstream Elementary

Vancouver Aquarium Sleepover Program - FULL

Hi everyone,

Marcie and I are organizing another trip to the Vancouver Aquarium to do the sleepover program. We did this last year and it was amazing! This year I think we will ask them to do a program on dolphins and possibly Beluga Whales.

We would like to organize this as soon as possible but do our visit in
Mid-September. We would love to hear from anyone who is interested and can commit to this time frame. (We won’t have an exact date until we have the numbers and can start to do the booking process)

Please contact me at kathylmackay@gmail.com if you are serious about wanting to do this so we can see if we have the 25 people needed for this to go ahead. We will probably cap the attendees at 30-35 people though.  I will need to know how many people including parents will be attending and also the ages of your children.

*SelfDesign will cover the cost if you get your cheque requests in very soon. In the past they made cheques payable to the parent organizer, Marcie, and then she paid the Aquarium with one cheque. You can also pay Marcie with a personal cheque if you choose.

EcoParent magazine

This was sent to the Kelowna group and I am posting it in case anyone is interested:

Dear Kelowna Learners Unlimited,

I am the publisher of EcoParent magazine, a new, national parenting/lifestyle publication geared toward making more conscientious, pro-active choices for our children. Though environmental responsibility is a big part of what we’re about, our overarching mission is to promote pro-active responsibility in as many ways as we possibly can, education being one of the most important. And while homeschooling may be a necessity for some, for many it constitutes exactly the kind of pro-active choice that is at the very core of EcoParenting. I’m contacting you today because we’re a fiercely independent publication, without any corporate backing, and we need your support!

Our first issue is coming out in May, and so the next couple of months are a crucial time to get the word out about our publication. Of course, we may also be able to offer something in return for your assistance, as we’d love to help increase the profile of homeschooling as a viable option in Canada. The kind of partnership I’m proposing could take a variety of different shapes, from subscription-based fundraising to bulk subscription acquisition to simple dissemination of information or cross-promotion.

In fact, we’ve already set up a 20% discount for homeschoolers who would like to subscribe to the magazine. The code to access this discount is “homeschooler” and it will be valid until March 31, 2012. Please feel free to use and disseminate this code as you see fit and appropriate.

If you would like to discuss possible ways in which we might work together toward the mutual benefit of our publication and your organization (and the people served by both), please do not hesitate to contact me at sam@ecoparent.ca, or by phone at 705 585 3448.

Best,
Sam Stedman, Publisher

Dance Classes update

The Creative Movement and Creative Ballet classes will all be starting this week as scheduled.  There are 2 spots left in the Creative Movement and 3 in each of the ballet classes.

However, the Creative Tap and Jazz are all being moved back a week in hopes of getting more registrations.  We have enough to run the intermediate jazz class and we only need two more to run the older tap class and 3 more to run the homeschooling one.

If you are interested, call Andrea at 250-503-5416 or e-mail innerworldschool@shaw.ca

Dance Classes at the Inner World School

edited to add a combined class for homeschoolers and to correct pricing for ballet class January 2, 2012 (scroll down to see corrections and additions)

Hello Everyone,
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with lots of family time.  We sure did.  Along with the usual Creative Movement Classes and Creative Ballet Classes, I am very excited to offer Creative Tap and Creative Jazz dance classes taught by my daughter, Eryn.  We offered these last year as well and I know the participants had a lot of fun and we sure enjoyed seeing their dances at the end of year performance.   Rhiannon is sure looking forward to doing these classes again.  The classes will be a similar format to the ones we already offer - the first half of class will focus on specific skill development and the second half of class will be dedicated to just dancing and having fun.  These new classes will also be a part of our end of the year performance and will also be expected to attend dance performances at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre with the other classes.  The schedule for the new classes is at the end of the e-mail highlighted.  We would greatly appreciate it if you could pass on the information to any you think might be interested.
Also just a reminder if you would like to attend the Ballet Victoria performance of Cinderella January 14th while I am away, there is still time to arrange it.  Please contact me right away (250-503-5416 or innerworldschool@shaw.ca).  Those of you who have said you would like to come, please get your money to me by January 5th.  Rather than driving all the way out to Coldstream, you can always e-mail me the money if you do internet banking.
And here are the details for dance class.  Please pass on to those who might be interested.  Thanks.
