Kelowna and Vernon Beach Day on Thursday

To learners unlimited and Vernon homelearners,

We have been wanting to meet each other at a Winfield beach for awhile and summer is trickling away, so....

The weather looks best for Thursday afternoon:
2:00 @ Kopje Regional Park.
Hope to see you there!

Jorie

15480 Carrs Landing Road in Lake Country B.C.
To get there from Kelowna, drive on Highway 97 North through Winfield and turn left on Oceola Road (Tim Hortons). Turn right on Carrs Landing Road and follow to Kopje Regional Park.

From Vernon, you can come on the back road to Carrs Landing Rd. or turn off the highway at Predator ridge golf course and access the same road which is gravel, but scenic and a lovely alternative to the highway. Otherwise, turn right off the highway in Winfield (Tim Hortons) onto Oceola and follow above.

Meeting Talk

I really enjoyed the meeting last night -- thanks to everyone who came! We missed the ones who couldn't make it!
I found that link I was talking about last night! In her post today she talked about just the one I hadn't been able to find! Yay! Here it is, in case it's inspiring to anyone else too:

Meeting This Week - Location?

Talkin' Donkey's room upstairs is booked by someone else tomorrow night. Does anyone have any other preferences? If it's a nice evening we could sit outside at Blenz (across from Super Store)? Thoughts?

Meeting tomorrow August 26th and Beach Day Friday the 27th

I just talked to Jill and it looks like there is a meeting tomorrow August 26th at 7pm at Talkin' Donkey. I might even be able to make it, wahoo!

Also, does anyone want to meet at Paddle Wheel Park Beach Friday at noonish? Justin and Ashleigh have a birthday party to attend, but I might be able to come and visit! ;0)

Not Back to School Picnic?

Would anyone be interested in meeting at Kin Beach on the first day of school? Say around 11:oo a.m. and make it an annual picnic?

Science Classes with V-Learn?

Has anyone registered with V-Learn or enrolled elsewhere and attended activities like the science classes at the Science Centre?

Multi-age Science classes

Is anyone thinking about organizing multi-age science classes at the Science Centre. I was thinking a station approach might work well. We are interested in participating.

Meeting this month?

Is there a meeting this month? I have missed so many in the past few months and it would be really great to get together next Thursday!

SelfDesign LifeShift 7: Gateways Program

We were talking about this at the beach today, so I thought I would put some info on here for others to look at. I see in this letter, which I missed from back in May, that it says that there is going to be a Kelowna Learning Circle. However, the letter I received from the LC in Nelson says there is only one in Nelson. (If anyone wants more info I can email you the attachment that came with this letter from Barbarah Nicoll detailing the program)

Dear Families of SelfDesign 13 & 14 yr old learners,

We imagine that you are enjoying the summer, reveling in this beautiful province where we all live. At SelfDesign we are also enjoying the out breath of summer, while still working on a few projects that are dear to

our hearts.

One of these projects is our Gateways Pilot Project for 13 and 14 year old learners. You may have already heard about this via a Village announcement, and we wanted to follow-up with this short email to

ensure that you are aware and invited to consider if this is a fit for your family.

Gateways is a pilot initiative of SelfDesign to invite young people aged 13 and 14 to move more deeply in to their own personal ‘selfdesigning’ while learning together with others who share their interests and

passions. We feel this approach will support learners as they move towards more independence in their learning, something that they can fully pursue as they turn 15 and move into SelfDesign High.

The Idea

In the Gateways program, learners will create both an individual learning plan for the year and will work with a group of other learners to identify activities and projects to do together.

A Gateways LC and/or Mentor(s) will provide team support for the group, for both individual learner’s plans and group project plans. The group learning will influence and support the individual learning plan.

Gateways is being offered in two forms: a province wide online group and learning circles in centres where there are 6 or more learners who wish for this.

We have learning circles that will meet face to face forming in Nelson and in Kelowna. There is also interest in Victoria and Nanaimo.

If you are interested please email Barbarah Nicoll at barbarahnicoll@selfdesign.org

I have attached our Gateways Information Letter with more information and FAQ’s if you are interested.

With a sincere wish for a glorious summer for us all,

• Barbarah Nicoll . Vice Principal SelfDesign High & Kathleen Forsythe, Vice Principal SelfDesign k-9
